BETWEEN THE LINES
An imprisoned woman has been proven innocent; her reminiscence on her past reveals the emotions she copes with.
Synopsis:
Emma, a writer and political activist, has recently been released from prison. Her new freedom feels strange and her memories of the past are constantly present.
There was a crime but it was thirteen years ago, during which time the facts were hidden and have never really been explained. Did Emma’s lover let Emma go to the jail instead of him? Maybe. The film asks the audience to make their own interpretation or conclusion if they find they need one.
The film’s narrative links are broken down to focus on the emotive tone of Emma’s experience – a state of loss, guilt, and trying to go beyond.
Between the Lines consists of 16mm film negative stock, video footage transferred to film, 16mm reversal – hand processed footage, and optically manipulated archival footage.
Director’s statement:
The film is inspired by prisoners who are unjustly imprisoned, a subject that resonates in the America of today. What are the emotional consequences? Loss? Grief? Revenge? Or is it just trying to find a path to go beyond?
Between the Lines is an inner dialogue of an innocent woman artist, recently released. Her memories push the film into different directions. The narrative links break down under the pressure of the woman’s emotions and her immanent need to express herself creatively.
The film’s narrative exists outside logic, mirroring the life experience of the character herself. I look forward to hear others’ opinions.
